Oval Pizza Boats

Oval Pizza Boats

Oval Pizza Boats

After more research, I have chosen to call this dish Oval Pizza Boats because this style of flatbread with topping or filling appears in more than one country; therefore, we will refer to it as pizza boats.

The Turkish call these Pide, while the Greeks call them Peinirli. To be honest, it’s “almost” the same dish: flatbread shaped into a boat or canoe with your choice of toppings.

So, in order to avoid conflict between both countries, let’s call it what it is: pizza, one of the world’s favorite comfort foods.

Oval Pizza Boats

I’ve always been fascinated by food, cultures, and traditions. Even though I am not Turkish, Greek, or Italian, people send me requests about this recipe after posting it on my Instagram Story last December for my sons’ birthday.

Well, I enjoy researching and diving into food history; reading about it, watching many videos by natives, and educating myself on how to create something for my blog without offending anyone.

I like to be respectful because I know how sensitive people can be about their traditional foods. That is how I have always been, no matter what I make or post on this little corner of mine.

Finger Food Recipes

These Oval Pizza Boats are extremely simple to make, and I will show you exactly how to do so every time. Additionally, just like pizzas, I believe these are just a bit easier if you have a crowd; if you have vegetarian, you can make these with veggies, and if you have meat lovers, just add some sort of meaty protein, and you have mini individual pizzas in no time.

Our Favorite Finger Foods

What are your absolute favorite toppings? I love it all but my favorite is ham and mushrooms, and it always has been.

Now, with this one, I also love adding creamy spinach and a sprinkle of feta instead of traditional pizza toppings and serving it with maybe grilled chicken. I do not even have to make it meaty.

It is so delicious that you won’t regret making it for your family. Seriously the possibilities are endless!

Oval Pizza Boats

Oval Pizza Boats

These Oval Pizza Boats are super simple and really delicious.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Additional Waiting Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup lukewarm whole milk
  • 1 tbsp. active dry yeast (use dry yeast according to packet details)
  • 1/2 tbsp. sugar

Topping on this one:

  • Onion
  • Mixed peppers
  • Gyro Precooked Meat
  • Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

Instructions

Dough:

  1. Add lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Allow yeast to bloom.
  2. Add AP flour and salt to a stand mixer with a kneading attachment if you do not have one, use a large mixing bowl.
  3. Once yeat bloomed, pour it over the flour, then start mixing while pouring 1 cup of warm milk. Let the mixer knead it for approximately 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth in texture but still soft and just a bit sticky. Again you can do this with your hands.
  4. Cover and let it rise for one hour. dough will almost double in size.

Topping:

  1. I used gyro meat; pre-cooked beef, and lamb.
  2. Cook peppers and onion, for a few minutes until softer, then add meat. Season with salt and pepper. My gyro meat was cooked so I just defrosted it and mixed them with my peppers.

NOTE: You can add any filling or topping of your choice.

Preheat Oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450F. Cut the risen dough into 10 pieces and shape them round. Cover the ones you don’t use with a damp clean kitchen towel so they do not dry out.
  2. Roll out one piece on a lightly floured surface into an oval shape that can fit onto your baking sheet. Place them into the baking dish, lined with fitting parchment paper. Add filling or topping of your choice on top leaving 2 inches of space at the edges.
  3. Fold the sides of the boats inside and press them well. Pinch the ends and seal, making it like a canoe. Hold it from the corners, stretch it a bit more as far as it can fit into your baking sheet. NOTE: I like adding filling in the baking sheet because it hard to transfer from countertop to baking sheet.
  4. Brush the sides with mixed egg and bake for about 18 to 20 minutes or until it is golden, and filling bubbly.

Notes

You can use any filling or topping.

For example, popular in my house are:

  • Creamed spinach and feta cheese boats
  • Minced meat and cheese
  • Chicken Fajita; cooked chicken and peppers

Easy Tuna Pizza

Easy Tuna Pizza Recipe

This tasty and easy tuna pizza is amazing all year round. You may make your own dough, use store-bought or perhaps tortilla. Whatever you choose it is absolutely amazing.

With this recipe, I am entering Tonnino Tuna Recipe Challange. After debating for a few weeks what to make, this pizza came to my mind.

We love pizza, of course, but I am a huge fan of tuna pizza. Often I would change toppings; sometimes I would use peppers, and feta or goat cheese and from time to time I make this just like this. Let me tell you, there is nothing like homemade easy tuna pizza.

I would usually make this over the summertime and serve it with a bowl of greens. Personally, I think that is a perfect meal especially if you are using good quality ingredients.

For this recipe challenge, I used Tonnino Tuna in olive oil. I was thorn between garlic in olive oil or just in olive oil. In the end, I picked tuna in olive oil.

Tonnino Tuna Pizza

However, you may use pretty much any flavor with these types of pizza because of the ingredients that I have used just work very well with any tuna.

What can I tell you from my experience as a Tonnini Tuna consumer? Well, not only that it comes in the jar, but the taste is delightful. I can confidently say that it is my family’s favorite tuna fish. On the other hand, any tuna, canned or in the jar would work just fine with pizza.

Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone

Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone

Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone
Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone

Calzone is an Italian oven-baked folded pizza that originated in Naples. Now with so many filling choices, you can design your calzone however you want, just like pizza.

The stuffing or filling that I am using today is my favorite. It takes several steps to make it, but let me tell you, it’s not difficult at all. I consider this in a league of very easy dishes.

Also, you may make your own dough or get it from the store. When I am lazy, usually I’d get dough from the store, but most of the time I make it a night before.

RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH

However, my boys are not too keen on mushrooms so I’d make for my older one Hawaiian Calzone, and for my youngest boy three meat Calzone.

My daughter essentially loves anything that you put in front of her, and she is not as picky as my boys, but I got to give them a credit that at least they try.

Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone

Personally, for me, mushrooms are heavenly. I love them and probably add them in so many one-pot dishes, especially sauces. Mushrooms are so delicious and there is nobody who can convince me otherwise.

Now, if you do not eat meat at all, please use loads of mushrooms, maybe sauteed peppers and onions, and make your vegetarian calzone.

With that being said, you may use sauteed chicken, beef, or deli hard salami, pepperoni, ham, etc. Seriously the possibilities are endless, however, today I am using my favorite.

Easy and delicious recipe for Italian Sausage and Mushroom Calzone

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Additional Time 10 minutes
Total Time 1 hour

Ingredients

Mushrooms:

  • 1 teaspoon Olive Oil
  • 1/2 pound Mushrooms sliced
  • Dash of Salt and ground black pepper
  • Italian sausage:
  • 2 teaspoons Olive Oil
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage

Brush on:

  • Olive Oil + 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup butter

Dipping Sauce:

  • 1 can Fire-roasted Tomatoes diced
  • 1/2 can Tomato Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Basil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 tsp. Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Sauce - Heat a pan to medium and add fire-roasted diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, herbs, and oil. Allow it to cook for about 10 minutes, just until it starts to bubble. Cover and set aside until ready for dipping.
  2. Mushrooms - Heat oil in a skillet/pan and add sliced mushrooms. Never wash mushrooms, but using a wet cloth, wipe the mushrooms. Cook mushrooms on medium-high heat for about 10 minutes or until they look cooked and all the liquid evaporates. You need to saute them because they will produce liquid inside of the calzone while baking. After that is done, transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel.
  3. Italian sausage - Heat oil in a skillet/pan and cook Italian sausage without casting. If your Italian sausage is in casting, remove it completely before cooking. Cook sausage for 5-7 minutes, or until it is no longer pink and it looks cooked through. After Italian sausage is cooked, transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel.

CALZONE

  1. Roll and press each ball into a circle 6 to 7 inches in diameter. Place filling ( cheese, meat, mushrooms, cheese) onto one-half, leaving about 1/2 inch border around the edge. Fold dough over filling; pinch and roll edges to seal in filling.
  2. Brush on each a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with some garlic powder.
  3. Bake about 20 to 25 minutes or until dough is golden brown at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Cool 10 minutes on a cookie sheet, and while cooling brush on a bit of melted butter.
  5. Serve warm with pizza sauce, and perhaps a salad.

Notes

You can use any filling that you desire. Make sure to dry it if it's sauteed, so it's a great idea to use a paper towel to absorb any moisture. If you are using sauce, such as pizza sauce, do not go overboard.

Add a tablespoon or 2, also on one-half of the calzone-dough rolled disk.

TIP: If you are buying pizza dough in the can (Pillsbury) make sure to get two of those because, for 4 calzones, 1 can will not be enough unless you are going to make a smaller version.

Try looking for homestyle pizza dough in a bakery section of your grocery store. Ask, if you can't find it. They make it fresh and store it in those little fridges close to deli meat, cakes, and bread
