Classic Patty Melt Sandwich
Classic Patty Melt Sandwich

These Classic Patty Melt Sandwiches are so simple, mouthwatering, and extremely easy to make. It is probably one of my favorites just because I absolutely love the combination of beef patty, cheese, and caramelized onions.
I mean, who would not love this?! It is a sandwich of my foodie dreams.

My family went bananas over it. You see, my husband and I didn’t grow up eating it like many of our American friends.
It was a completely new experience when I first made it compared to some of you eating it in your school cafeteria or diners.

However, I can say that I am so glad that I was the one who introduced this American Classic Sammie to my family. Indeed! It is a must-have at least once a month.

Classic Patty Melt Sandwich

What is Patty Melt?

As I said, patty melt is a sandwich consisting of a hamburger patty with melted cheese and topped with caramelized onions between two slices of griddled bread, traditionally rye or marbled rye. However, sourdough or Texas toast usually is substituted in some regions, including the southern U.S.A.

Well, It is unclear when the patty melt was precisely invented. There are records that it was served as early as the 1940s. The patty melt is a variant of the traditional American cheeseburger, but instead of using it in a bun, it was served on the toasted bread.

beef

These Classic Patty Melt Sandwiches are mouthwatering, tasty, and so easy. It is probably one of my favorites burgers just because I absolutely love the combination of beef patty, cheese, and caramelized onions.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds Laura’s Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 tsp Table salt
  • 1 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4-1 stick of butter, unsalted, divided
  • 10 oz Yellow onion, sliced
  • 6-8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices of Bread; we used Texas toast

Instructions

  1. To Laura’s Lean Ground Beef, add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until all ingredients are combined then divide the meat approximately into 4
equal portions (about 6 ounces each). Form each portion loosely into the thick burger to fit your bread slices, then make a deep depression in the center with your thumb.
  2. Place on the platter, cover, and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, turn the stove to medium and heat your skillet, griddle, or a frying pan then add unsalted butter.
  4. When the butter is melted, add the onion, toss to coat in the
butter. Toss every 2 to 3 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brown. About 12 to 15 minutes. Set aside!
  5. You can grill burgers or use a skillet/griddle. Since it is a grilling season, I thought of making my burger on the grill.
  6. For the grill: Grill the burgers until golden brown about 4 minutes on one side, flip, and grill 4 minutes for medium-rare. Please make your burger doneness your preferences.
  7. If you are cooking on the sauté pan, skillet, or griddle: Heat the oil in the skillet or griddle over high heat until the oil begins to shimmer; Turn down the heat t medium, then cook burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare. When done set aside.
  8. Spread a thin layer of butter on each slice of bread.
  9. Place a slice or two of cheese, a tablespoon of caramelized onions, a burger, a bit more of carnalized onions and top it off with the cheese. Place another slice of bread on top.
  10. Heat your skillet or a griddle, then toast the sandwich on both
sides for a few minutes until golden brown and crisp, and the cheese is melted. Slice in half and serve right away.

Croque-Monsieur Sandwich Recipe

Every so often you just have to enjoy a delicious sandwich. I think there is undoubtedly nothing better than a French staple grilled cheese sandwich.

Also, better known as Croque-Monsieur Sandwich. In translation, it means Gentlemen’s Crunch.

My favourite way to eat a croque-madame is with a little sunny-side-up egg on top, with a drizzle of hot sauce!

With that being said, you should also try a “Croque Mademoiselle” which is a vegetarian version with cucumber or zucchini and chives.

I genuinely feel like this sandwich instantly transports you back to a French café or charming bistro, where you may have ordered it while sipping on a café au lait.

You may know this sandwich in the USA as a Monte Cristo Sandwich. Nevertheless, it is delicious whatever you call it.

My husband and I devoured it because we absolutely love a good sandwich.

Especially with premium carved cuts of high-quality meats like Hillshire Farm® Premium Carved Slow Roasted Seasoned Ham.

Croque-Monsieur Sandwich Recipe

I partnered with Hillshire Farm to make something very delicious using their Premium Carved Meats.

We used Hillshire Farm Premium Carved Slow Roasted Seasoned Ham to make this delicious sammie.

So, I took a trip to Walmart and located the packaged lunch meat in the perimeter coolers.

There, I found Hillshire Farm Premium Carved Oven Roasted Turkey Breast. As well as Hillshire Farm Premium Carved Rotisserie Seasoned Chicken Breast.

Croque-Monsieur Sandwich Recipe

Every so often you just have to enjoy a delicious sandwich. I think there is undoubtedly nothing better than a French staple grilled cheese sandwich, better known as Croque-Monsieur. In translation, it means Gentlemen’s Crunch.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

Bechamel Sauce

  • 3 1/2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter reserve 1/2 tbsp for buttering the bread
  • 1 1/2-2 tablespoon/s All-purpose flour substitute 1/4 tbsp Guar gum
  • 2-2 1/2 cups Whole milk
  • 3 ounces Gruyère Cheese, grated substitute with Swiss Cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 Sprigs of Thyme steam removed

Sandwich ingredients

  • 1/2 tablespoon Melted Unsalted Butter reserved from Bechamel Sauce)
  • 8 slices Sandwich Bread preferably rustic, or traditional Brioche toast
  • 8 slices Hillshire Farm® Premium Carved Meat, I used Ham
  • 8-10 ounces Gruyère Cheese, grated substitute with Swiss Cheese (aged)

Garnish:

  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives or green onions

Instructions

Shread/Grate the cheeses; Gruyère Cheese and Swiss Cheese. You may use more or less, but I think this is a perfect amount. I like shredding my own cheese and it melts even better when you do it.

Bechamel Sauce:

  1. Melt the butter over low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour all at once, stirring with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes. Add milk; bring to a simmer.
  2. Cook, whisking frequently, until sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the salt, pepper, grated Gruyere, and the Swiss and set aside.

Toasting

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees with rack in bottom third. Place 8 bread slices on the baking sheet, butter each toast with unsalted butter, then toast for a couple of minutes.
  2. After the toast slices are nicely golden take it out of the oven. Just to note that you can toast bread in a large toaster or conventional oven as well if that saves you time.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. Top each with half with bechamel sauce, about 1 tablespoon equally spread, then add slices of the ham and shredded Gruyère. Top with remaining bread.
  2. On the very top of each sandwich add about 1 more tablespoon of the Bechamel sauce and generous amount of shredded Gruyère.
  3. Turn the oven broiler on high and transfer the baking sheet with sandwiches in the oven. Broil until the top of the sandwiches with bechamel sauce and cheese begins to bubble, approximately 2 minutes.
  4. Slice in half and enjoy

Notes

For Croque-Madame add a fried sunny side up egg on the top and serve.

  • For Croque-Madame, add a fried sunny-side-up egg on top and serve.
  • Gruyère cheese is one of the finest Swiss cheeses. Its taste is nutty and salty when new but varies greatly with age. Since it can be quite pricy, you can substitute with regular Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

  • 6 English Muffins
  • 6 tablespoons Cream Cheese softened
  • 6 Canadian BACON thick cut (6 slices/6 Oz/170g) / Or any other deli meat
  • 6 slices cheese, provolone, cheddar or any other (I used both)
  • 1 tablespoon (14g) garlic herb butter, melted
  • 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard, about 9g
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon lemon-black pepper seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. Open English muffins and place them in non-stick baking pan. You may grease it a bit or use a parchment paper/silicone mat to prevent sticking.
  2. Spread on each muffin bottom about 1 tablespoon of softened cream cheese, then add Canadian bacon and a slice of cheese. You can add more if you would like. Place the tops on.
  3. Melt butter in the microwave for 20-30 seconds then adds yellow mustard, dried parsley, and lemon-black pepper seasoning if you desire. Mix well!

  2. Preheat oven to 375F/190C and bake muffins for about 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven. The time depends on your oven as well as the way you want toy muffin; for more crunchy, bake for 15 minutes, but do check after 10 minutes of baking.
  3. Enjoy the sandwiches HOT, with perhaps salad on the side.

Notes

You may use other deli cold cuts, precooked chicken, burger meat or bacon. Any meat would be okay.

You may use any cheese of your choice.
